Introduction to Hydrogen and its Role in Decarbonization (ON-DEMAND) - IHD

Course Summary

This course provides an introduction to hydrogen in all its roles - as a chemical feedstock, a zero-emissions fuel and as a carrier and storage medium for renewable energy. You’ll learn about how hydrogen is currently used, and how its production and use is expected to expand dramatically as we transition to a zero-carbon energy economy. We will cover the extraordinary properties that make hydrogen potentially invaluable, yet also awkward an inefficient to use. You’ll learn how hydrogen can be produced and how it can be put to use. We’ll review emerging government policy on hydrogen and finish with a look at what seems to make sense to focus our efforts on as we rapidly scale up hydrogen use between now and 2050.

Who Should Attend?

Course Content

You will learn to:

  • Point out the units most commonly used to measure hydrogen
  • Identify some hazards and risks associated with hydrogen
  • Differentiate between gray, blue and green hydrogen
  • Recognize the main industrial processes used to produce hydrogen
  • Point out several ways in which hydrogen can be packaged for transport
  • Identify some of the difficulties associated with transport and storage of hydrogen
  • Identify several different ways in which hydrogen can be used
  • Recognize the main potential applications for hydrogen in different energy sectors
  • Point out hydrogen’s potential role in the power generation sector
  • Recognize the range of national and regional policy approaches taken to hydrogen
