Brand-New Online Course: Introduction to Blockchain

This online training course provides an introduction to blockchain technology. You will learn what blockchain is, how it was originally created for the Bitcoin cryptocurrency, and some of the cryptographic techniques that underpin its unique capabilities. We will see how the technology can be adapted for business use and deployed in energy markets. You will learn about some early blockchain projects in energy markets, explore blockchain’s future potential and consider possible barriers to deployment of blockchain.

There are no pre-requisites for this course and no advance preparation is required.

You will be able to:

  • Know what blockchain is and where the idea comes from
  • Describe the potential benefits of blockchain in a business contextp
  • Point out what makes blockchain different from other database technology
  • Identify why energy markets have strong potential for blockchain development
  • Describe the basic aims of the Bitcoin cryptocurrency
  • Name and describe some of the cryptographic techniques used by Bitcoin
  • Identify ways in which the Bitcoin blockchain is suited and unsuited to business use
  • List some key features of typical business blockchain implementations
  • Identify the main benefits of blockchain technology in energy markets
  • Recognize some example blockchain projects in energy markets
  • Identify some potential barriers to rapid uptake of blockchain in energy markets
