Corporate sustainability, the optimization of environmental and social performance, is good business. It’s practice helps you understand impacts and dependencies on communities and the natural world, identify associated business risks and opportunities, and supports overall corporate strategy to improve operational integrity, asset value and profitability. However, in these politically charged times, it is difficult to get corporate sustainability right. Navigating stakeholder pressures from all sides of the political spectrum can be overwhelming. Knee-jerk reactions to these pressures wrestles attention away from your core business resulting in wasted resources, greenwashing, and missed opportunities.
This course will introduce you to the application of corporate sustainability in key business functions, including: investor relations; board, executive and stakeholder engagement; operations; systems design and planning; supply chain management; sales and marketing. We will present global frameworks that inform processes for setting priorities for action based on a business-savvy assessment of those material elements of sustainability most important to key dimensions of your operations, wherein these issues are approached as functional constraints rather than problems to be addressed with minimal commitment. Armed with these skills, you will be equipped to guide your company around the rocky shoals of outside pressure to achieve business success while bringing value to the people and places touched by your company.
This course is designed for executives, managers and planners responsible for key aspects of business planning and operations who are beginning to confront sustainability questions and challenges. It will serve as a first step in gaining fluency in this area of growing importance, wherein the path forward requires clear understanding and deliberate yet prudent action.
