Overview of the Renewables Industry (ON-DEMAND) - ORI
Course Summary
Renewables, once thought to be a fringe component of the energy industry, have become a mainstream market segment with significant growth prospects. Increasing concerns over fossil fuel greenhouse gas emissions and climate change now have various types of renewable energy taking market share from traditional fuels used in power generation. From economic and operational perspectives, however, not all renewables are equal. Some forms of renewable energy, especially solar and wind, suffer from intermittency issues… the sun doesn’t always shine and the wind doesn’t always blow, but advances in battery storage technologies are greatly lessening the impact of intermittency and are increasing their commercial viability.
Course Content
You will learn to:
- Identify the role renewables play providing emissions-free power needed to meet growing global electricity demand
- Define climate change and distinguish between the differing opinions on the subject
- Point out the different types of renewable energy available in the market and identify how these assets are being commercialized through the use of energy storage technologies
- Compare the actual cost of different renewable technologies relative to each other and to traditional fossil fuels using a levelized cost of electricity approach
- Identify the greater role to be played by the private sector in developing renewable technologies
Practice exercises and self-assessment quizzes are included to help reinforce key topics introduced throughout the course.
A comprehensive final test will be given at the end of the course.
